As a baseball player, he went to see a major league game in 1884 with his favorite team, the Louisville Eclipse. The star player broke his bat and Bud invited him to his fathers wood working shop to make a new one. After Bud made the new bat, Pete Browning got 3 hits with it the next day, and began to pass the word of this miracle kid that could make bats!
